My right Achilles has been hurting for 12+ months and training for this race was limited. I managed 7 weeks training and there was a 17 day period in Feb where, under physio's orders, I took a complete break from running. This was the peak of the training schedule and when I got to the start line I didn't know if a) I had the fitness or b) if my Achilles would hold up. So my plan was to be conservative and go for a 5m 20s pace and see what happened. It was very cold start to the day. The downhill start from Old Trafford into Manchester obviously meant I set off far too quickly in the first 4km (5m 04s pace)! From then on, my plan was to hold back until half way and make sure I took an energy gel every 5km after 10km. I reached half way in 1h 50m and felt good. I increased the pace a little until 30km and re-evaluated. At 30km, there was no reaction with my Achilles and I still felt strong - so decided to go as hard as I could until the end. With about 1km to go I saw Helena and Max on their bikes and they rode alongside for about 800m before I turned into the finishing straight. With the end in sight, I hit 4m06s pace for the last 300m and came in at 3h 39min - my 3rd fastest marathon!

Well done to all the runners who braved the wet and muddy conditions to Hit The Trail!
